Budapest set for historic first European edition of Zayed Charity Run
Thousands expected for two-day community sporting celebration
ABU DHABI – Budapest is preparing to host the first-ever European edition of the Zayed Charity Run this weekend, marking a major milestone for one of the UAE’s most prominent humanitarian sporting initiatives.
The event, held under the theme “Run for Kindness”, is expected to draw thousands of participants from across Hungary and abroad for two days of sport, culture and charitable engagement.
Organised by the UAE Embassy in Budapest, the event aims to celebrate the humanitarian legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan while promoting values of compassion, coexistence and community wellbeing through sport. The races and accompanying activities will unfold across some of the Hungarian capital’s most recognisable locations, transforming the city into a vibrant centre of international participation and cultural exchange.
Participants will run through landmarks including Heroes’ Square, Andrássy Avenue, Széchenyi Chain Bridge and the Danube promenade, creating a scenic route that blends athletic competition with the historic atmosphere of Budapest. Organisers said the event has been designed to welcome people of all ages and fitness levels, reinforcing the run’s message of inclusivity and social solidarity.
Zayed Charity Run
The programme will begin on Saturday, May 16, with a full day dedicated to families and community participation at Városliget, also known as City Park. Activities are scheduled to encourage children, parents and community groups to take part in a lively outdoor celebration centred on health, movement and charitable spirit.
The Children’s Fun Run, organised by Lounge Group, is scheduled for 11am and is expected to attract young participants from across the city. Later in the afternoon, the Family Run organised by Balatonman will begin at 3pm, bringing together residents and visitors in a relaxed and festive atmosphere.
Alongside the races, visitors will have access to entertainment zones for children, interactive activities and wellness programmes aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles. Organisers said the family-oriented opening day reflects the broader vision of the Zayed Charity Run, which combines physical activity with social engagement and cultural connection.
Main race
Attention will shift on Sunday, May 17, to the competitive segment of the event, featuring 3km, 5km and 10km races. The 10km race is expected to serve as the weekend’s flagship competition, attracting experienced runners as well as amateur athletes seeking to participate in the landmark European debut.
The race route will start and finish at Heroes’ Square before passing through central Budapest. Runners will move along the historic Andrássy Avenue and Deák Ferenc Square before crossing the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge towards Clark Ádám Square. The course will then continue along the Danube River, passing the Hungarian Parliament Building before returning to the finish area.
Organisers described the route as one of the most visually striking race experiences in Europe, combining historic architecture, riverfront scenery and cultural landmarks within a single course.
Cultural spirit
Beyond the sporting competitions, the event will feature a broad cultural and wellness programme designed to deepen interaction between local communities and international visitors. Live drawing sessions by renowned Emirati artist Abdulla Lutfi will form part of the entertainment schedule, alongside UAE cultural performances and traditional Hungarian dance shows.
Visitors will also be offered warm-up sessions, yoga classes and health screenings provided by Doktor24. Award ceremonies are scheduled after each race, while a symbolic “Wall of Kindness” will allow participants to share messages celebrating humanity, tolerance and togetherness.
Lt General (r) Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi said the initiative carries a humanitarian message that extends far beyond sport. He described the Zayed Charity Run as an international symbol of giving and coexistence inspired by the enduring values of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Al Kaabi said every participant taking part in Budapest contributes to spreading messages of peace, tolerance and humanity. He added that the European edition reflects the UAE’s continued commitment to humanitarian initiatives and healthier communities through sport.
He also praised the efforts of organisers, sponsors, volunteers and strategic partners whose cooperation has helped expand the global reach of the initiative and strengthen the UAE’s humanitarian presence internationally.
The Zayed Charity Run has grown steadily into one of the UAE’s leading humanitarian sporting platforms, combining athletic participation with charitable and cultural engagement. Organisers expect strong attendance from professional runners, diplomatic communities, charity supporters, families and sports enthusiasts, positioning the Budapest edition among Hungary’s major community events of 2026.
